Bag of Hope Program
When Liddy Huntsman (age 12) was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 1997, she and her parents, Jon and Mary Kaye, decided to turn the challenges into something positive. They created a”Bag of Hope”as a gift for every child who is diagnosed with diabetes.
The “Bagof Hope”includes Rufus the teddy bear with diabetes and a variety of educational and motivational materials for each newley diagnosed family.
A child and parent(s) who are experienced with diabetes, deliver each”Bag of Hope” personally to the newly diagnosed families at point of diagnosis. The parents and children share feelings and ideas about coping with the disease, and newly diagnosed familieslearn there is asupportive JDRFnetwork of caring familiesready to help, backed by an international organization dedicated to finding a cure.
If you haven’t received a Bag of Hope and would like one, please contact the Chapter at 801-530-0660 or email@example.com, and we can arrange to get you one!
The Utah Chapter has a wonderful network of parents and families ready and willing to help you through your diagnosis, or any issues you may face with your child and their diabetes. Please contact the Chapter office if you would like to be linked up with any of these families. This is a great opportunity to make new friends and help your child to realize that they are not alone in their diagnosis. We would be happy to help you make the connection! We are always in need of mentors! If you are interested in getting involved in this capacity, please contact Stacey at the office – firstname.lastname@example.org.
JDRF has a fantastic presence on Facebook and is a great resource for you to turn to if you have a newly diagnosed child, or if you have had diabetes in your family for ages. There are numerous parents and children on our Facebook groups ready and willing to support anyone and EVERYONE in the T1D community. Please feel free to join us! There are two groups on Facebook for type 1 families:
- The JDRF, Utah/Idaho Chapter group, which is moderated by the JDRF Chapter staff. This group provides updates on Chapter events, fundraising campaigns, research and more. You’ll want to be a part of this group!
- The T1D Utah group is a group moderated by the mother of a T1D child. This is a group to go to for support of the everyday challenges diabetes presents. The members of this group LOVE to lend a listening ear, provide suggestions, help with schools, pumps, insulin dosing, etc. It is a great group!
Boise Type 1 Moms Lunch Group
A fantastic group of moms meet each month to discuss the challenges of being parent to a type 1 child. As you all know, there are times when you need to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through, and other parents are a great resource! If you are interested in joining these ladies for lunch sometime, they would love to expand the group! They meet on the first Monday of each month at 11:30 am at the Souper Salad on the corner of Ustick and Eagle (Boise – in the Kohl’s parking lot). If you have any questions, please contact Kathy at 208-861-8359.
